A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
