Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash

Personalities from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.

This is a vile and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
