Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in armed forces or security positions.
"As we did, you all took an oath to protect and uphold this constitution," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute directives that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
The Former President's Incensed Reply
The clip seemed to provoke a furious response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a joint declaration condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme online messages and retract his dangerous language before he causes harm," the statement continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who care for this country and took an pledge to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, coercion, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important duty."
"The significant point is that the president considers it liable to punishment by death for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the constitution and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the official declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who conspired to organize a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can cause casualties, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
