Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at 81 Years Old
Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, their son and daughter.
Cliff was beloved for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a large and loyal fanbase.
Beyond his music achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
