Leeds Keep Liverpool at Bay to Earn Hard-Fought Point at Anfield
A pair of unbeaten runs continued intact at Anfield, however only one team could take real contentment from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook strategy of frustrating and restricting Liverpool, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the persistent issues within the current title holders' recent upturn.
Defensive Display Earns Crucial Point
A lacklustre goalless draw, the first in 84 fixtures for Liverpool, was primarily due to the immense solidity of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, coupled with the home side's inability to unlock a compact visitors' defence. Liverpool were limited to speculative half-chances, and a sprinkling of boos could be heard around the stadium at the final whistle on a sluggish display.
"If I do not utilise the whole squad and we have a fixture list like this, I would never make changes," Daniel Farke stated. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all are aware his recent couple of years was challenging. He is in incredible shape but it's important I manage him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the heart."
Liverpool's Frustration in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team initially showed more energy and precision than in recent matches, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the right side. However, clear-cut opportunities were few and far between. Their best moments in the opening half fell to forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a neat one-two with Curtis Jones, the French international drifted infield and forced a stop from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The Leeds' goalkeeper spilled the shot, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the rebound.
- Ekitiké later raced clear onto a ball over the top but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his shouts for a penalty were dismissed.
Spurned Opportunities Are Costly
Ekitiké's afternoon worsened when he failed to hit the net with his clearest opening. Meeting a swift Frimpong cross in the six-yard box, the striker misdirected a glance that hit the goalkeeper while facing an open goal.
For Leeds, their most notable opportunity came from an Alisson error. The Brazilian keeper played a wayward clearance straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort returned towards goal was saved by the alert Alisson.
Scrappy Final Stages
The contest descended into a bitty affair, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, back from a ban, forced a save from Perri from range. The subsequent scramble led to Ampadu controlling the ball, giving the hosts a free-kick in a dangerous area, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
The Liverpool manager introduced a three change to bring impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to nodding his team in front from a corner, his effort flying just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring streak for the visitors in the closing stages, but his finish was ruled out for a tight offside. Ultimately, the two teams had to settle for a single of the spoils.
