Following a week of heavy downpours that led to inundation across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unseasonably hot weather for this time of year.
Record-Setting Readings
On Friday midday, the temperature reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, according to weather officials. This exceeds the prior high for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established just last year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official charts for the region.
Safety Advisories
The weather service cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance featured:
- Staying hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sudden spike in temperature follows closely after a intense storm system that battered the area last week. That event unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, triggering evacuation orders for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also resulted in a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead some relief will arrive. Readings were expected to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in central Los Angeles by overnight.
Other locales that reached ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were forecast to reach the high eighties.
For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can expect readings in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the week ahead.
