The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
