This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
